The Mozart trio is the first and most famous trio for this combination. Described by the musicologist, Alfred Einstein, as “a work of intimate friendship and love,” it was written to be enjoyed by friends playing together at home.

The Eight pieces by Bruch were written for his son Max Felix, a talented clarinettist.

These are “character pieces,” a 19th century Romantic term to denote music intended to portray a particular mood rather than to fit the more elaborate sonata or variation forms inherited from Haydn and Mozart.
